How Did We Get Here

This project originally began as my end-of-semester exam. We were assigned to create a digital teaching tool designed to help a hypothetical future multimedia student — someone who might need to either learn a completely new subject or deepen their understanding of it. The challenge wasn’t just what we taught, but how we communicated it. I chose to focus on Character Design, partly because it is a subject I genuinely find interesting, and partly because it feels highly relevant to my future within multimedia design. Character design sits at the intersection of storytelling, illustration, psychology, and visual communication, which makes it a perfect subject for exploring how design choices shape meaning. A key requirement of the project was that we should not rely on long blocks of text as the main teaching method. Instead, we were encouraged to use design, interaction, and visual systems to explain concepts in a more intuitive and engaging way. That challenge became the foundation for this site. From that starting point, CharaCraft evolved into an interactive space where users can explore core principles like shape language, proportion, and silhouette by directly building and modifying characters. Rather than just reading about these ideas, the goal is to experience them through experimentation. This site is still a work in progress, but it represents an attempt to turn theory into something hands-on. I hope it can be useful not only as a learning tool, but also as a way to spark curiosity in anyone interested in how characters are designed and why they look the way they do.

Why Use This Tool

Character design is often something people understand best when they can see it change in real time. Reading about concepts like shape language, proportion, and silhouette can be helpful, but it can also feel abstract when it’s only explained through text or static images. This tool is designed to bridge that gap. By letting users actively build and modify a character, the learning process becomes hands-on. Instead of just being told that certain shapes communicate certain ideas, you can immediately see how a round, square, or triangular form changes the personality and feel of a character. The same applies to proportions and silhouette choices, where small adjustments can have a big impact on how a design is perceived. This kind of interactive learning encourages experimentation. There is no single “correct” result — instead, the focus is on exploration and understanding why certain design decisions work the way they do. That makes it easier to remember and apply these principles in your own creative work later on. In short, the tool turns theory into experience. It is meant to support learning by making character design something you can actively play with, test, and understand rather than just read about.

Who am I?

Ara (also known as Ara Bird) is a multimedia design student and the creator behind CharaCraft. This project was developed as part of an end-of-semester exam, where the goal was to design and build a digital teaching tool aimed at introducing future multimedia students to a chosen subject. In this case, the subject became character design. Ara is responsible for the entire development of the site — including concept, visual design, user experience, and all coding in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The project was built as a fully interactive learning tool, rather than a traditional text-based learning resource, with a focus on hands-on exploration and visual understanding. The idea behind CharaCraft comes from a strong interest in both character design and future animation studies, as well as a broader belief in gamified learning. Instead of passively reading theory, users are encouraged to actively experiment with shape, proportion, and silhouette to understand how design choices affect character identity. While there was no single defining moment that sparked the idea, the project grew from a simple concept: creating a Picrew-style character creator with an educational layer built into it. This combination of playful interaction and structured learning reflects Ara’s approach to design — where theory and creativity are not separate, but integrated. Through this project, Ara aims to demonstrate an understanding of core character design principles while also exploring how digital tools can make learning more intuitive, engaging, and visually driven.
